GOODWILL MISSION DELEGATION MET
WITH NATIONAL LEADERS
PRESS RELEASE DECEMBER 28, 2006 IMMIDIATE RELEASE The Goodwill Mission Delegation who were sponsored by Somaliland Policy and Reconstruction Institute (SOPRI) and have been in Somaliland for few weeks, have visited all the regions of the country, met with all the regional and local leaders, and have concluded their mission with a historical meeting attended by all the national leaders at the President’s office. The meeting was attended by the President and some of his Ministers, Parliament, Guurti, Justice Department, leaders of the Political Parties, Traditional leaders, religious community members, and members of the civil society. The Delegation prepared a set of recommendations after it has concluded its fact finding mission to all the regions. The recommendations submitted included the resolutions from the 2006 Somaliland Conference in Metro-Washington DC in the United States. The Delegation put particular emphasis on these recommendations; (1) To establish Permanent National Commission that promotes the relationship between the different branches of the government and resolving their differences on matters of great consequences for the nation (it must have members from Administration, Parliament, Guurti, Justice Department, Political Parties, Traditional Leaders, Religious community, and Civil Society) (2) Strengthening the private industry by introducing commercial banks (3) To strengthen the media by establishing privately owned media outlets such as radio particularly in eastern regions (4) To immediately introduce the Somaliland currency in the eastern regions. Mr. Abdi Yunis, who is the coordinator for the delegation said “all the Somaliland leaders who participated in the meeting have welcomed their recommendations, and have promised to work on their implementations”. Mr. Yunis later told the media the Delegation will release their complete report publicly on a future date and make copies available to the Media. He went to say the Media is essential part of democracy and Somaliland Media must meet its responsibility to inform the public with high standards of journalism.
